Changing The Narrative

Updated: Nov 10, 2022

Former Ohio State quarterbacks Braxton Miller, JT Barrett, Cardale Jones, and Dwayne Haskins all struggled to establish themselves in the NFL. Miller switched to wide receiver, Barrett went into coaching, Jones is looking for a team, and sadly, many people are still grieving the loss of a young Dwayne Haskins. Due to the failure of each of these former Buckeye quarterbacks to succeed in the league, there is a perception that all quarterbacks from Ohio State are unsuccessful. Scouts, for instance, questioned Justin Fields, another quarterback from Ohio State. His work ethic, leadership, and capacity to flourish in the NFL were questioned by scouts. Here is an example of Justin Fields’ ability and character being questioned.

The NFL has changed the way the game is played over the past century, but it seems that many coaches are still stuck in the past when it comes to how a position is played or a player's physical characteristics. For instance, most coaches are looking for a 6'4", 230-pound pocket passer who can read defenses quickly and tear them apart with his arm by making rapid decisions and consistently being accurate.

The Typical Quarterback

Quarterbacks who are smaller or more athletic are frequently criticized because they play the game differently than their male counterparts. Since they were listed as being under 6'0, Russell Wilson and Kyler Murray were questioned if they could succeed. As a passer, Cam Newton and RG3 were scrutinized. The passing skills and durability of both Lamar Jackson and Jalen Hurts have sometimes flown under the radar by coaches and the media. One coach even questioned Lamar Jackson's intelligence. Here is the tweet made about Lamar Jackson who has grown into a unanimous league MVP. The same prejudices that the dual threat quarterbacks before him have faced also apply to Justin Fields, one of the numerous athletic quarterbacks who are emerging in the NFL.

In 2021, Justin Fields was a rookie quarterback for the Chicago Bears and had trouble maintaining his success. "Chicago Bears is where quarterbacks go to die," a former quarterback declared. Fields, on the other hand, showed a few flashes during his first season, but it seemed that his coaching staff and the squad that was playing for him were insufficient to support the young quarterback. To develop Justin Fields and create a team around him, the Chicago Bears' owners hired a new coach in Matt Eberflus and a new general manager in Ryan Poles. Hoping that this would result in more victories on Sundays, Mondays, and Thursdays.

The Bears have not been flawless thus far in the NFL's 2022 season, as seen by their win-loss record of 3-6. But there are reasons to believe that Justin Fields is the future in Chicago. Despite having an arguably below-average supporting cast, the future star has achieved career highs in statistics. Here are Justin Fields' most recent statistics for both last season and this year as well.

During his time in college and the NFL, the former Ohio State quarterback was the subject of scrutiny. Fields recently broke Michael Vick's single-game quarterback rushing yardage record when he ran 15 times for a total of 178 yards in a game against the Miami Dolphins and threw for three touchdowns, demonstrating his potential to flourish as a dual-threat quarterback. It was likely his greatest performance to date. Watch Justin Fields best plays here. Justin Fields has given Bears fans optimism that they have found their franchise quarterback, something they haven't had since Jim McMahon, which was over 30 years ago.

Justin Fields has demonstrated in such a short amount of time that he is distinct from the quarterbacks from Ohio State and Chicago who came before him. Rather than being vocal and responding to his doubters, Justin Fields has silenced them with his play and demonstrated that he has the potential to be an elite runner and passer.
